Building a Personal Family History Website?

Hi Would anyone know of any good websites where you can download software to build your own Family History website please? I know there is Tribalpages, but they build it for you and you just add in what you know, and that way you cant add your own personal touches such as the homepage having a background picture of a village where they lived or ancestor biographies. I would then like to have it appear on the Google and Yahoo search engines Has anyone done this yet? Thanks Ben

Ben You can add photos to your Tribal Pages - 50 free and 100 if you use the upgrade. I think it is excellent, but then I am a computer idiot, and the thought of creating my own site is beyond me. You can also get a TP lisitng on Cyndi's List - but I don't know how to do that! I have just connected to another tree on TP and we have over 100 matches. OC

Ben At the moment, I've got a webpage via my Family Tree Maker software. I should think it's similar to Tribal Pages in that you put in your info, photos etc, and the page is built for you. However, I'm thinking of setting up a website with a company advertised in recent 'Your Family Tree' magazines. It seems very reasonably priced but you can choose your own layout etc. The address is http://www.1and1(.)co(.)uk (remove brackets). Mandy

Hi Olde Crone and Mandy Yes I will try out that website tomorrow. The more family history info I put on the web, the more chance I have of getting contacts. I have Family Tree Maker 2005. Ben

I started a website using the facility in a tree prog. , since then have been adapting it and extending it using FrontPageExpress and uploading it to the free webspace from my internet provider using COreFTP. Once you have built a site do what I did and get it listed on CindisList. It will then be found by search engines such as Google as well as people who log on to Cindislist. Here's the address you'll need (remove the *) http://www.cyndislist.*com/faq/submit.htm

Rootschat are offering free webspace. I had a look but found the technology beyond me. They do have a lot of threads on the subject but I could not cope with the jargon. I use tribal pages and think it is very good. I have recently upgraded to the £12.00 version as I wanted to download my gedcom to another site. Tribal pages lets you add about 500 word biography to each person. Anne

I've been looking round as well because I also want to get my information onto the internet. I was inspired when I put my great-grandma's name into Google and found three or four different sites. At the moment, unfortunately I can't seem to find anything.

Saving for later too! I also got inspired when put my GGGG Grandfather's name into Google and found the website of a distant cousin in New Zealand! Cheryl

Hi Having read the posts I might upgrade at Tribal Pages and see if that is any better, then I can add ancestor biograpies. I will also get my sites added to Cyndis List to your suggestion Judith. That might actually be easier than building a new website from scratch. Ben

Ben The biography bit with the free version of TP is 500 words, or 1000 words with the paid version, for each person on your tree, so neither option is limitless. So far I have found it sufficient for my needs - perhaps TP would do you as a temporary measure while you fiddle around setting up a website? TP is easy to handle, correct, and I find it much more user friendly than...erm...my tree on another site.It has a few minor drawbacks but I am happy to put up with them for the overall ease of use. Good luck anyway - let us know how you get on because I am sure lots of people - including me - would be interested to know how easy/difficult it is to set up your own website. OC
