My great grandfather, in Ireland , was a Constable in Metropolitan Police when he got married (1895) then became a Farmer, Road Contractor -build a road on Bray--and Wool Buyer -.Seems a bit odd but maybe his father died -haven`t found out yet, Ros

My husbands great grandfather was a Farmer in 1851, a Police Constable in 1853, back to a Farmer in 1856, and an Inn Keeper in 1871. Think they just took any job that was on offer in those days. Kath. x

Yes I had a policeman 1838 then carpenter 1841then undertaker and another ancestor mariner then handyman then publican then machinest.

Not wishing to cast any slurs, but many Met policemen were dismissed for drunkeness. As today, people changed occupation because of changing circumstances.

Maybe I misread your thread - he was a policeman in Ireland? I was thinking you meant the London Met - as you could check his service record and see when he left the force and maybe why.
