I remember my grandfather showing me the medal and paper notifying his mother that his father was missing in action presumed dead (WW1). The medal was the size of a saucer - I'd love to know where it went....... Anyway - is there anywhere I could find such records (other than Kew)? Elly

You should be able to find the relevant medal index card online via The National Archives website. The newspaper article would probably have been a local newspaper and you can probably find it again at the relevant local library service/history centre/records office. You might even find something online by googling the name.

The Memorial Plaque you mention was issued to the families of all War Dead - it was colloquially called the dead man's penny. You can look up the details of the grave of the man concerned on the CWGC site - and look up the Medal Index Card at National Archives site. Ther only way you can get the service records is from Kew either by going there or getting an agent to get them for you, Approx price £5. Regards Keith Hi Nell. I think the paper referred to would be the telegram rather than a newspaper.

Keith & Nell I think I might have him, but need to order my grandads birth cert to confirm it is the correct one. My grandad was Frederick William Grimbley b1908. The only CWGC record which seems to fit would be the F Grimbley, Royal Field Artillery as the one in the Leicester Regiment I am presuming would be too young at 25 - but could be wrong. Keith - I think your right about the telegram, I remeber it being an official paper rather than a newspaper - would love to know where they are now! Anyway, thanks both for your help Elly
