I have just received the death certificate for my great grandmother, the date is 1920 my great grandfather is named as the widower of above. I have also received the birth certificate for what we thought was one of her children yet the father is named as my great grandfather but the mothers name is different. But the other women has taken my greatgrandfathers surname indicating that they were married. Now here's the mistery on my grandmothers death certificate it is 1920 on the birth certificate of the child's it is 1917 so how could my greatgrand father be the widower of the deceased if he was married to someone else before her death. Has anyone else come across this and if so is there a simple answer, because if there is i certainly carn't find it.

Have you found a second marriage? If not, he is still her widower, even if they were living apart. And, even if he DID remarry while she was alive, some people disapprove of divorce on the grounds that marriage is for life, until one or other partner dies, and she may have felt she was still married in the eyes of God, if not actually in the eyes of the civil authorities.
