I have found a relative who was a sack collector on the 1841 census. Have googled it but can't find anything. Does anyone know what it was. Georgina

Hi Georgina What sort of area, if it was a mill area, could be for wool or grain, or it could be coal sacks - where are we looking. regards Looby

It would be the equivalent of pallet collectors in more recent times. In those days a lot of things were delivered to the retailers in sacks (potatoes and grain immediately come to mind) and so the sacks would have been collected and then perhaps returned to the farmer for a fee. Victoria

Sacks would be used to deliver goods from wharehouses to shops/traders. Many goods were transported by sea. They also went to be mended when they had holes in them. ( In one census, I found an ex sailor employed as a sack mender) Jay

Hi All, Thank you all for comments. It helps a lot. I shall do some scouting round the area to see what kind of industries were there. Georgina

Sack was also the name of various light, dry, strong wines from Spain and the Canary Islands, imported to England in the 16th and 17th centuries.
