Hi I am desperately in need of some help here. I have been searching for Stewart Hughan born Kircudbrighshire 1825. He married Elizebeth Campbell in Kirkcudbright in 1846. They had 8 children all born in Kirkcudbright. I have Stewart on the 1861 1871 census for Colinton Edinburgh. I know he died between 1871 & 1882 but can find no death anywhere for him. I also can't find his birth which would open up a whole lot of new doors for me as i would hopefully then find out who his parents were. I have now been searching for over 2 yrs . Can anyone advice me were too look now or even help me Thankyou

Kath Unfortunately there will be no birth record for Stewert as Civil registration began in 1855 in Scotland. The only record you might find is a baptisum / christening record, these often do include the parents names but not an accurate date of birth usually. If you have not already done so, I suggest you have a look at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk where you'll find all Scotish census records, civil registration records and some parish records. Ancestry has the 1841 Scotland census transcription now and this may be your ancestor. Scotlands People should have the image of the census. If it was my family I would be checking out the 1873 death just in case the name is listed wrong and to eliminate it. Maureen

Hi Kirkmabreck parish church is in a place called Creetown which these days is under Dumfries & Galloway - but close enough to Kirkcudbright. My grandfather was registrar for many years there but that was long before I took any interest. St John Street is the main road in the village. The church is lovely and the graveyard is beautiful and well kept. I can't search for you as I live 200 miles away but if you google Creetown you should be able to find some friendly local who would have a scout round for you! regards Bridie
