Help! I used to have ( & still do,at work) Windows XP and breezed round the Genes site no problem. My hard drive and computer crashed, and Ihave been given an old one for home, with Windows 2000. Now I'm having loads of problems! When I click on a name in my tree, the tree page opens, but is blank, I then have to re-enter the persons name in the 'search this tree' box. Now the shared trees pages has changed, I can't seem to get past page one on shared trees! It keeps saying , in bottom left of screen; 'done but with errors on page'. Also , if I go into my tree and ok any alterations, an internet explorer box appears, saying that iexe.explore has found an error and completely shuts down the web pages! Can anyone help!! Worded for a novice, please!!!

Hi, I use Win2000 and don't have any problems with the OS or IE6 - same cannot be said about GR though! If I were you I would first run a virus scan, then Spybot & AdAware (both free) to remove any spyware or adware, to make sure the system is clean. Then have you got the latest security updates from MS? There have been many in recent months so you should logon to MS Update site (should be a shortcut in your Start menu). If all is well after the above then I suggest you should check your IE/Browser options to enable Javascript and ActiveX. If still a problem, let me know.

In addition to what was suggested above: Go to the Microsoft Windows Update site - do all the CRITICAL updates as well as the CUSTOM updates....you will have to visit the site several times in order to complete all the updates - Under CUSTOM there is an update for INTERNET EXPLORER which could be part of your probem(s). You can visit the Microsoft Update site at: http://update.microsoft(.)com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us May I also suggest the following change in your PC settings: Fixing “Website Can’t Be Found” and other Site Error Messages More than likely you have trouble with accessing quite a few sites.....particularly getting the message 'website can't be found' among a few other error messages. Try the following and it should solve your problem. 1. Go to START. 2. Click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS. 4. Change NUMBER OF DAYS TO KEEP IN HISTORY to “0” and click APPLY 5. A box appears with tabs labeled across the top. Click on ADVANCED. 6. Scroll down to the sub-heading SECURITY. 7. Make sure the following has check marks next to it: Use USE SSL 2.0, USE SSL 3.0 and USE TLS 1.0. 8. Also make sure you check off EMPTY TEMPORARY INTERNET FILE WHEN BROWSER IS CLOSED. More than likely USE TLS 1.0 is not checked of and it should be. This will give you the error messages, as well as a few others, that will prevent you from viewing web sites and the error you are getting. Make sure you empty your cookies cache as well as temporary internet files once in a while, too, as this slows down your computer and these folders tend to 'remember' the errors and may continue to bring them up until the folders are emptied. As for the JAVA program you might need (and should have, regardless) you can find that program at: http://www.java(.)com/en/download/index.jsp Remember to remove the ( ) from the addresses I mentioned above before attempting to visit the sites. I've also nudged up the '1 Stop Routine PC Maintenance' thread on the TIPS board for you that you may find helpful. Judy
