on board ship during census??????????

thank you all for your thought's ,and Jim i have him in bristol in 1891 and 1901,with wife Sarah and children...but unable to find him in 1871 or 1881 so just thought he might be on board a ship..It seem's if he was then i do not stand much chance of finding him...thank's again Sandra |

Royal Navy ships wherever they are including civilian pasengers are listed in the Census. Civilian/Merchant ships only if they are in harbour. Keith |

My g-g grandfather was on board ship, in port, on the 1851 census. I could look at one of the first pages to find the name of the ship, which was great; the officers were listed firstin ordeer of seniority, then the crew, then finally passengers were listed at the end. Hope that helps. |

I have a lot of mine on board ships when the census were taken, they were in either merchant or royal navy. Others were on barges and fishing vessels. I don't know if civilian passengers were listed though. |

If the ship was docked in a British dock on census night, then the name would appear in the census as normal. If they were at sea, then I don't think you will find it. Kath. x |

Is there anyway of finding out if someone was on board ship when the census was taken..I am interesed in the 1871 and 1881,a Thomas Dowling born in Bristol about 1871...Any help would be much appreciated..Sandra |
