I am looking for a marriage for Walter Ayres (born 1858 in Reading) to Agnes Howard (born 1872/3) - my husband's great grandparents. They had a son Arthur Walter Ayres in sep 1908. Agnes died in 1915. Walter in 1934. I have found Walter on the 1881/1901 census married to Amy Hope Verey with a son Walter Charles. I am pretty sure it is him from various clues - place of birth, job the same as on Arthur's birth cert, but the family have never heard of Amy or Walter Charles. I cannot find trace of a death for Amy or marriage for Agnes. I assume his marriage to Agnes was a second marriage or maybe they were never married? Where do I look for divorces? There is a possibilty that Agnes was married previously and perhaps I should be looking under another name! Can anyone recommend any tips of finding this missing link as I do not know what happened to Amy or when and if Walter married Agnes. Thanks Heather Ayres Thanks for your help. I've got the birth cert of Arthur Walter Ayres born 25/9/1908 and it lists Walter Ayres & Agnes Ayres (nee Howard) as parents - no middle names! ALso I think Walter Charles Hope Ayres married someone else in 1906 - not an Agnes! Any more suggestions welcome!!! |

If you get the 1908 Arthur Walter birth certificate, it will give you mother's maiden name. |

OK - I know this may sound silly - but isn't it possible that the 1908 born child has father of Walter C H Ayres born 1880 and mother of Agnes Howard (1872/3) It's easy to get your Walter's mixed up. If above is the case, then Amy needn't be dead when you thought. |

His occupation on Arthur's birth cert (1908) is Auctioneer's clerk. I think one of the census' lists him as this too! |
