Carol

Carol On the IGI, there's a John Johns Venton marrying an Elizabeth Carter at St George the Martyr, Southwark on 28 Sept 1824. Unfortunately, the IGI doesnt have St George baptisms. The PRs are kept at the LMA, so you could search there, if you are able to get to London. Good luck, Carol

Yes Georgina, I've seen that. I'm assuming the reason the family came to the east end in the 1860s was maybe for the work in the docks.

Thanks Angela, and to everyone else for your advice. I should have known to look under Benton, the times our surname has been mistaken for Benton or Fenton, this will hopefully solve the mystery.

Hi, if you havnt already done so you will need to search the parish records for his baptism details. Suzanne Update: try searching the earlier censuses using just his first name, birth year +/- 2 years and his county of birth. It may just be mistranscribed.

Could be either Carol - surnames of maternal lines are often used as a second forename. Alternatively, he could have been born with that as his original surname and then took Venton as a courtesy surname after a step-father. Be open minded and look for both in earlier census and on IGI. Also do an IGI search for a Jeffreys Ventnor marriage. However, I have some where the origin of the middle name belongs 3 or more generations further back, so there is no marriage combination of the names. Jay

Carol Jeffreys was more than likely mother's/grandmother's maiden name - it was quite common to do that. What was father John's occupation? Angela

I'm stuck on a relation called Daniel Venton born 1834. I found him on census lists 1861 to 1901 but not before. I have his marriage cert, he married Elizabeth Sparrow in Lambeth, Surrey, 31 October 1853. His fathers name says John Venton. What puzzles me is that his full name is Daniel Jeffreys Venton. I'm wondering if he may not have been born in the name of Venton as Jeffreys sounds more like a surname than a middle name. I have looked for him under Jeffreys as well but no luck. I'm very new to family history so any help would be much appreciated. I'd really love to get further back with this name.
