I couldn't find a marriage for my GGGrandparents. Their first child was born in 1877. After trawling the records several years either side and not finding them, I put a request on this board for advice. Within minutes a kind person had found the right names but the date was 1917! I sent for the cert not really thinking it would be the right couple but was amazed that it was. Fancy marrying 40 years after your first child, he was 62 and she was 56! It just goes to show you can never presume anything, and people that help on these boards are all brilliant. Carole xx |

Carole I had one like that! My gg grandparents were married in 1909 when he was 68 & she was 56. Their first child was born in 1875 & their last in 1895. My gg grandfather was shown as a widower, so I'm assuming he had to wait until his first wife died. Someone on GR also suggested that new pension laws were brought in about that time, which may have persuaded them to marry! Angela |

I think it was probably due to the introductionof the old age pension. Men had to produce a marriage cet to get the married couples allowance. I think vicars were probably quite busy. Anne |

My goodness Carole, I didn't think it would be... but, well... there you go! Never assume anything in this game! That marriage that didn't happen before the birth may have happened 20 years later lol I wonder why they waited so long.... is either of them widowed on the cert? |
