By tradition, my husbands family always had the second name of McKensie for the eldest son of the eldest son. My mother in law broke with that tradition and i followed suit. I am now sorry that I did. Kathlyn

Thomas these were the common naming patterns in Scotland & the mothers maiden name was often used as a middle name.. First son - named after child's paternal grandfather Second son - named after child's maternal grandfather Third son - named after child's father Subsequent sons - named after uncles, cousins, or whomever First daughter - named after child's maternal grandmother Second daughter - named after child's paternal grandmother Third daughter - named after child's mother Subsequent daughters - named after aunts, cousins, or whomever Georgina.

when two clans came together there was sometimes an arguement as to what name came first in a marrage so sometimes both names were used or the oldest child was blessed with both names

Hi folks, anyone know if it was common to use a Mc as a middle name? As in.... John McGuffie McKie So... no hyphen, but was there anything relating to how a name with two Mc's was used back in the 1890's. Would the McGuffie be a middle name, or suggestion of a double barrelled surname. cheers.
