Hi all Thankyou for taking the time to look this up. Gwyn, it is a photocopy and quite neatly written. Gill I too googled it and came up with those two answers but could not make head nor tail of them. I feel maybe Gary is right and it is mispelt, but why would someone of only 40 die of rheumatism. having got around 150 death certs, i have never failed to find the cause on the antiquusmorbus site, (a lot more comprehensive site than the paul smith site, which has failed me on many occasions on the cause of death), but your cause is not on there, so i would say it is almost certainly a miss speling

I have an old book 'Alphabetical List of Diseases and Causes of Death'.... and it is not mentioned there. Do you have a photocopied cert. or has it been hand written as a copy and maybe that's where the A and R muddle set in.? Gwyn

I have received a death cert from 1885. The cause of death appears to be Aheumatism, this person was only 40 years old. Now I realise it could be rheumatism but the handwriting is quite good and it certainly seems to begin with an A. Has anyone come across this previously. Regards Kim
