Although I am sure Ada was a lovely woman I would prefer that she wasn't really part of my tree.....LOL......Please see below. It's a little long winded but covers all the facts as I know them. I would welcome your thoughts and opinions. Chris

Ada Grinsted appears in the 1871 as the daughter of my GGGGGrandmother Elizabeth Osborn. Now I don't think she is and it's just an enumenator error but I have checked back and forward through the censuses..... 1841 HO107/1121/8 41 21 >Add Grinsted abt 1830 Sussex, England Brighthelmstone Sussex Marianne Grinsted abt 1816 Sussex, England Brighthelmstone Sussex Sarah Grinsted abt 1832 Sussex, England Brighthelmstone Sussex Thomas Grinsted abt 1811 Sussex, England Brighthelmstone Sussex 1851 H108/1574 426 2 >Ada Grinsted abt 1830 Kenington, Surrey, England Servant Lambeth Surrey Caroline Lee abt 1805 Middlesex, England Sister Lambeth Surrey Mary Lee abt 1803 Middlesex, England Head 1861 RG9/66 78 1 Eliza Aldridge abt 1837 Frerelar, Surrey, England Servant St Marylebone Middlesex >Ada C N B Grinstead abt 1832 Brighton, Sussex, England Servant St Marylebone Middlesex Jane A Hewell abt 1843 Reading, Berkshire, England Servant St Marylebone Middlesex Joseph Marris abt 1812 Barton, Lincolnshire, England Head St Marylebone Middlesex Joseph H G Marris abt 1858 Marylebone, Middlesex, England Son St Marylebone Middlesex Lucy G Marris abt 1854 Marylebone, Middlesex, England Daughter St Marylebone Middlesex Marianna S Marris abt 1830 Marylebone, Middlesex, England Wife St Marylebone Middlesex Rosa W G Marris abt 1860 Marylebone, Middlesex, England Daughter St Marylebone Middlesex William J G Marris abt 1856 Marylebone, Middlesex, England Son St Marylebone Middlesex Alice R Woodford abt 1853 Bow, Middlesex, England Niece St Marylebone Middlesex 1871 RG10/678 6 11 >>>Ada Grinsted abt 1837 Boughton, Sussex, England Daughter Lambeth London Cathrine Osborne abt 1850 Lambeth, Surrey, England Daughter Lambeth London Eliz Osborne abt 1811 Rotherhithe Head Lambeth London Eliza Osborne abt 1855 Lambeth, Surrey, England Son Lambeth London Louisa Osborne abt 1862 Lambeth, Surrey, England Daughter Lambeth London Samuel Osborne abt 1858 Lambeth, Surrey, England Son 1881 RG11/606 144 53 >Ada Grinsted abt 1832 Brighton Lambeth London Marianne Grinsted abt 1818 Tunbridge Wells Head 1891 RG12/402 34 110 Maria Ann Grinsted Head Widow 75 Tunbridge Wells Kent >Ada Grinstead Single 54 Brighton Sussex 1901 RG13/417 88 4 >Ada Grinstead Lodger Widow 65 Laundry woman Brighton Sussex And re the change in year of birth/place....Ada Grinsted/Grinstead, is the only one I have found ! :) There is an extracted entry on the IGI for Ada's Baptism at Brighton. Father Thomas Grinsted, Mother ELIZABETH. This would make Maria shown in the 1841 Thomas' second wife and there is an extracted entry in the IGI for the marriage 13 May 1841 at Brighton, her full name being Marianne Crips. On FreeBMD there is a marriage at Brighton, Thomas Peter Grinsted to Marriane Cripps Q2 1841.......So maybe they just stretched the truth for the enumenator :))))) ........Oh well we are getting married next month LOL There is a submitted entry on the IGI for a marriage between a Thomas Peter Grinsted and a Elizabeth Baker 5 April 1827 at Steyning (9.2 miles from Brighton according to Parloc) but I'm not reading anything into that!! Proven facts for MY Elizabeth.......I have Elizabeth Hawkins and John Osborn marrying in 1833 and my GGGGrandmother was born the same year. To prove this I do have a birth certificate for another of their children that gives Elizabeth's maiden name as Hawkins. Now I suppose it is possible Elizabeth, born at Rotherhithe, moved to Sussex married Thomas Grinsted had two children and then left them to move back to Surrey (Lambeth) to bigamously marry John Osborne. Then, before 1871, her long lost abandoned daughter traces her and goes to live with her but the daughter, not liking what she has found, returns to live with step mum........ Possible..... But highly unlikely I would have thought although it would make a great story :))) I would welcome your thoughts and opinions Many thanks. Chris

Chris, Yes, I agree - if she can be so wayward about her origins, then it doesn't give the 'daughter' part credibility! By the way, to be fair to Marianne, the 1841 census was taken on 6 June.

Ivy I withdraw my assumption re Marianne's marriage :))) I do know, really, when the '41 was taken .........Just didn't recheck. A lesson learned and wrist thoroughly slapped!!!!!! LOL Thanks for that Chris

At a glance I would say that it was an enumerator error. Ada was a servant most of her life so might have been in 1871 - could the Osborns afford one? Have you traced the Osborns back through the census?

Chris in Sussex

Chris in Sussex Report 16 Oct 2006 22:17

Lyla Yes I have the Osborns traced through from the '41. Elizabeth was a widow in 1871, occupation General Dealer. The household also included a son same occupation so I suppose they could have afforded a 'general' servant. I hadn't thought of that.... Many thanks Chris

Hi Chris, My Great Grandad was stated as a General Dealar on his Death cert, and I know he was a rag and bone man. So was his father, Linda
