I'm having real problems trying to find out some info on one side of my family. ALl I have is that Jack Tonkin married Katherine Watters and had a number of children, the first of whom was my great gran Frances Audrey b.1906/1907. These names were given to me by a great aunt, and I can't find them anywhere! Just wondering what Jack could be an alternative for. James/John...anything else? Which is more likely out of the two> Thanks Laura

John usually ,although I do have a relative who was Christened Alister but always called Jack! Could you find the birth of your great gran first and get the cert to confirm both names. ? Kim

Hi - thanks for the quick replies! Have found one possible family in 1891 but not sure, that's a Jack. Think I will have to try and get the birth cert. I'm in touch with a great aunt who may be able to help but things are a bit awkward at mo so just trying to get a head start! Thanks again Laura

Was Frances born in Cornwall,( there is a Frances Audrey on BMD) if so why not order her birth cert, that should give Fathers name. Linda

This one looks possible know the names different but could be known by a middle name Tonkin John Alfred Redruth 5c 331 Waters Elizabeth March 1906 Redruth- which would fit nicely just before birth of Frances in 1907 Kim

Thanks Kim. Yeah, I had seen that one and thought it possible, like you say it fits in nicely with Audrey;s birth. A lot of the children were known by their middle names, so maybe the parent's were too! Guess i'll have to get hold of the birth cert - would answer my questions! Just a bit of a cheap skate at the moment! Laura

Do you know the names of any of great nan's siblings and approximate date of birth? Any after 1911 would help with mother's maiden name in birth index but your surest route would be the 1907 birth cert. Gwyn

Usually John. (Although it is a name in its own right.)
