Oh dear this is a little complicated, but here goes..... Daughter is Elizabeth Delay born abt 1841, when she married in 1861 she named here father as 'Thomas Delay'.............. Her mother Margaret, re-married in 1857 a man called Daniel Donovan and she named her father as 'Charles Delay' (Elizabeth has Daniel Donovan as a witness at her wedding) Sorry, I have amended this message, I put Patrick Delay when I should have said Thomas Delay, sorry to those of you who have spent time and effort on my behalf, I will go and stand in the 'naughty child' corner. Margaret wouldn't have been called Delay when she married so it's no good looking under that name. You will need Elizabeth Delay's birth certificate in order to get her mother's maiden name. You could just order the marriage certificate you found for Patrick and give the name Margaret for the bride as a checking point. UPDATE - Sorry - just realised that Margaret gave her father as Charles Delay, so Delay WAS her maiden name. Kath. x

have you Margarets marriage cert to Daniel Donovan cos that will say her marital status . Its poss Elizabeth was illegitmate, need to get her birth cert if she was registered Have looked on Ancestry for 1840-1842 and elizabeth isnt reg.

I've looked at 1840 and 1841 for Elizabeth's birth reference and I can't find it. Kath. x

It sounds like she might be. Sometimes illegitimate girls made up a father's name and said he was deceased, so they looked more respectable to their new in-laws. Kath. x

So, can I 'assume' that Margaret and Elizabeth were Delay, and would Margaret have used the christian name of the father, ie. Thomas, but used her own surname.?? Kathlyn
