It should be the correct certificate. You had six weeks to register the birth, so if he was born in late December, it could easliy have been registered in the first quarter of ther following year. With the GRO reference number, you can order the birth certiicate. This will give the mothers full name, including her maiden name if she was married. If she was married, her husbands name will be on the certificate as the babies father. If she was not married, then it depends. Some certificates do have the fathers name on, if he gave permission, others don't. Once you have her name, you can look for her birth and order that certificate, that will give her parents names. That should then take you back to 1901, so you can start searching the censuses. I assume you know you can search the bmd's for free on Ancestry, including the full images? A late December birth could well be registered in the first quarter of the next year. It does sound as if you have found the right one if the mothers maiden name matches. Maureen

I finally found my dads birth records, they said the birth was registered in 1934, but he says he was born in 1933 late december though), is this still likely to be the same person? It has the right name and area, and maiden name of his mother, and its the only place I can find it. Also, he can't remember her given name, I thought both parents full names were shown on birth certificates, how can I find out more about her? I don't even know if she was married when my father was born, I just know that he grew up with a stepfather, whos name he can't remember. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, and I'm in NZ so unfortunately I can't go looking anywhere other than the internet.
