Hi Victoria, I have checked the census as follows:------- Margarets age 1851 she is 40 =1811.....Margaret age 1861 she is 46 = 1815. By 1871 their daughter, Sarah Ann is living with her 'half sister', Elizabeth. I would suggest that between 1861 and 1871 both Margaret and her husband Daniel had died!!!! I have checked through the deaths for 1862 - 1871 and have found 6 possibles for each of them. For Elizabeth 3 poss. in Poplar and 3 in St. Georges in the East. For Daniel 2 poss in Poplar, 3 in Stepney and 1 in St. Georges in the East. Because these three areas overlap the the known areas they lived in I must make a choice!!!! Kathlyn

Ugh! Just looked at the 1841 census and Delay is too close to Dal[e]y and Delan[e]y for my liking (and yours I am sure). Have you followed Margaret through the census' with her [new] husband and checked where she gave as her place of birth? I think the younger people are, the more likely it is that they get their age rightish - so probably checking her age on subsequent census' won't be that helpful. It would be too much to hope for that her aged mother went to live with her later in life I suppose. Only one child lends credibility to the illigitimacy theory - but it is possible she lost other children and/or was widowed young. The 1851 census has her as a widow (compare with the U for unmarried further up the page) Most girls married - and married young. I would have thought it was unusual for a woman to remain single until her late forties. Good luck!! Victoria

Oh Victoria, there are time when I should have taken up sky diving instead of this hobby!!!!!! I have a copy of the 1851census and the print out states that Margaret is a sister to the household, but...I have just had a look at the actual census and the writing says...'visitor'. Margaret was born abt 1811, so no cert available, though I have tried the parish registers and cannot find an entry for her in the area she is supposed to have been born in. As for Elizabeth, unable to find a birth for her recorded birth date which is abt 1840. So, the only name I have to go on is Delay. Kathlyn

Not really - and you knew that didn't you? Lol What was the sister's surname? What does Elizabeth's birth certificate say? Have you looked at an earlier census? Quite a bit of proverbial 'leg work' before you can even THINK about assuming!! Victoria

Margaret Delay was the mother of Elizabeth, I found them on a census living with a sister!! of Margaret, so assumed Margaret was a widow.........Margaret 're-married' when Elizabeth was about 17. I have just received the marriage certs of Elizabeth`s marriage and also of Margarets '2nd' marriage. Now.....On Margarets cert. she is stated as 'Spinster', can I assume!!! she was unmarried when Elizabeth made her entry into the world????? It`s far to early for a G&T !!!! Kathlyn
