Thank you all for your help. The Yorkshire line was the one I was following until I was told that that Edward was living with his parents in Yorkshire after 1871 when my Edward clearly appears with his wife Fanny in 1881. The Edwin Bartrum Vaux is a possibility and I will investigate it further.

Can anyone suggest why I have not been able to find my gt grandfather in the 1851,1861 and 1871 censuses even though he makes his appearance in the next 2 censuses after he marries in 1871. These entries for him suggest that he was born in Walworth Surrey or Surrey in 1849. I have tried every possible misspelling of his name - Edward Vaux - and tried searching under the name of his father - as stated on his marriage certificate - John Vaux, a butcher. I have had no joy at all from a search for his birth, and indeed he may not have been registered. But I would expect to find him somewhere on the relevant censuses. Any help or ideas for a next step would be very gratefully received.
