Coast Guards in Plymouth 1900

I have just found out that my GG Granddad was in charge of the first auxiliary coast guards in Turnchapel, Plymouth. There were also 7 other members of the same family who served. Would like to find out more about this. I have spent a couple of days at the local library, without much success. Is there a society I can contact to get more information? Any advice would be much appreciated. Regards Paula

Hi Try the Seamen's records on Documents Online, I am not quite sure what it covers as regards Coastguards, but worth a shot. Regards Gail.

You can obtain information on coastguards through TNA at Kew. You may find info online if you google search TNA+Coastguards. You can at least download a leaflet on Coastguards and see where you go from there if you are unable to visit yourself. There is a book called 'Hooe and Turnchapel Remembered' by Arthur L Clamp published 1981 as remembrance of Turnchapel. Turnchapel was a hamlet of Plymstock on the Cattewater and the coastguards would have operated from Staddon Heights/Mount Batten/Jennycliff area. It is only a small pamphlett with many names of people in the area and lots of old photographs. You may be able to get it through Amazon. I purchased my copy from The Plymouth Dome Museum on the Hoe Janet
