Thanks...yes I realised.... The Liverpool Records Office hold the parish records and do 1 hour's research for £16. I am just waiting for them to do some research to verify another marriage later up the chain. When I get that back, I will then ask them to look up the C o f E marriages in that area... This part of going beyond 1841 and the BMD online is new territory... Am signing off now - this genealogy has turned me into an insomniac. Thanks for your help. Liz

Good morning Liz - more bad news I am afraid - no marriage certificates before registration - July 1837. I put the name into familysearch but got no matches 1895-1815 so it looks as though you are going to have to look in parish records. Victoria

Thank you so much Victoria - I wondered what I was doing wrong with my threads! And thank you for confirming what I thought. Everything else checks out down to 1841 census with Joseph Ronnan b1822 Printer's apprentice. The next step is to get his parents' marriage cert. They are: John b about 1781 England - Shipwright. Fanny b about 1789 Chester (a/c to 1851 census). In 1851 census Fanny Ronnan is widowed and a school mistress, living in Islington, Liverpool. Death index shows her in Dec 1857. The death certificate won't show her maiden name so that won't help trace further back. Not being able to get to Liverpool, I guess then the early searches will have to be done by Liverpool Records Office.... Living relatives were told they eventually go back to the Isle of Man...Am just waiting for a final verification from the Records Office before I embark on this. Thanks. Liz

While they are at the same address they are listed as two separate households which is more than coincidence. John is described as step-son of John Tryer, Richard is a printer and his son is called Joseph after grandpa. So, for what my opinion is worth - yes. I think they are brothers too. Victoria

Liz, if you just put a small 'taster' in the first box with - see below and put the detail in an add reply box it will come out with the formatting in tact. You can key the whole thing in the first box, cut what you want to put in the reply box - and that way it doesn't take ages between the title going up and the actual query appearing. In the meantime, to make it easier to follow:- Hi. I think I'm right here but can someone else check my logic... Birth cert and marriage certs of RICHARD RONNAN b 1847 Liverpool - his father is JOSEPH RONNAN (printer) and his mother is AUGUSTA YOUNG. Richard is living with Joseph and Augusta in 1851 census. Augusta marries a John Tyrer following death of Joseph. From the census records, John is living with Augusta and step son John Ronnan b 1852. So John is Augusta's son by 1st marriage. Now wait for it... John Ronnan b1852 marries Richard Ronnan's widow Sarah Eva in 1875. I have both marriage certs. From the census in 1871, they had all been sharing a house but no clue as to relationship between Richard and John. On John's marriage certificate, his father is stated as JOHN JOSEPH RONNAN (printer). (On Richard's marriage cert, father is Joseph Ronnan - printer) In 1861 census, Richard is away at the Blue Coat School, Liverpool and John is with the family. So can't verify their relationship there. I've checked for deaths (on BMD with Ancestry) respectively of John and Joseph Ronnan and there are both names between 1851 census when he was alive and 1858 when Augusta remarried. So no help there. I think Richard and John were brothers. (These pesky Ronnans are transcribed by Ancestry as Ronnau, Ronan, even Ramey). Can I take it that Richard and John are brothers and that their father was known as both John Joseph and Joseph? Thanks - myself and another GR member are both interested in this reply! Victoria
