Yes Jools but in Claire's original message she says Laura Preston 'had a child called Edward Sheridan in 1890' Later she says that her gt grandfather, Edward Sheridan was Laura Preston's son and was born 1910. Though Laura's husband was Edward Sheridan as well and could well have been born around 1890 I urge Claire to start with the event she is most sure of - her gt grandfather's birth - and work back from that.

Judith - Claire's new to genealogy, so it's very easy to be confused, and I don't think we should be too hard on her. The MC I found in 1907 is likely to be of the most use to her.

This is the problem when the info is to a certain extent guesswork......... The only reliable way for Claire to approach this is to start with her parents and work backwards, buying certs for each generation............. It is fraught with danger to start at the 'other end' as it were. Reg

We were all new to genealogy once - no one is being hard on you Claire, just giving well meaning advice that you need to start with recent known events and work back slowly. I didn't take my own advice recently mind you, and ended up building a detailed, but totally wrong tree for my grandad's cousin - I thought I knew when and who she had married, traced the couple through several censuses, found birth refs for their children, was in contact with someone related to the husband - THEN bought the marriage cert to find it wasn't my lady at all, but another with the same name, born within the same year :-(
