.... and in 1881 Father's name: James Mother's name: Annie Gender: Male Where born: Manchester, Lancashire, England Civil Parish: Manchester County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: 18 Bridge St Education: Employment status: View Image Registration district: Chorlton Sub-registration district: Chorlton Upon Medlock ED, institution, or vessel: 12 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Sarah A. Fowell 49 Sarah E. Fowell 17 Annie Mitchell 26 Annie Mitchell 3 Herbert Mitchell 2 James Mitchell 30 Maud Mitchell William Mitchell 4 The Fowell/Powell's were boarders - skirtmakers - as was Ellen Martin I think, although she could have been a shirtmaker! Anyway, narrows down the search for a marriage to about 1876/7 when William was born Victoria

Terry - I think this is the same family as the 1901 'lot' - with Annie's General labourer husband still alive. You're sure it says Tailor and not Joiner? I found a John Cumming in South West Manchester, living in Clegg Street, aged 48 who I thought would be a prime candidate for the second husband - but it says Joiner (Carp written over it). I think a trawl through the marriage index will find you a Mitchell/Cummings marriage - but one doesn't readily show up on FreeBMD. Perhaps it would also be worthwhile to look for a John Cummings death 1919 > If you can find the age of John it will make him easier to find on the census - with place of birth etc. I found another Joiner - but no tailors!! Mind you, since it is unlikely he is the father .... Perhaps give up on the Cumming bit and look for a marriage for an Ann/ie to someone called Mitchell about the time the first child was born. Helen and Carol, Thanks. Martha was 24 at marriage. I was disappointed at parents marriage not being shown on marriage cert. I suppose as a Nursery Governess she more than likely moved away from home. I had hoped to find her death cert in the hope that it gave me some more information. Robert's death cert from 1968 doesn't even show him as single, married or widowed. Is that usual in an English cert?? Terry

Closest match I could find on 1901 census - but no certainty. All the names are so common, and Manchester is quite a way from Herne Bay. Name: Martha Mitchell Age: 6 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1895 Relation: Daughter Mother's name: Annie Gender: Female Where born: Manchester, Lancashire Registration district: Chorlton Sub-registration district: Ardwick 6 Cross Place, South Manchester Household Members: Name Age Annie Mitchell 47 head M. office cleaner Herbert Mitchell 21 station messenger Jennie Mitchell 17 shirt folder Thomas Mitchell 14 errand boy James Mitchell 12 Annie Mitchell 10 Alfred Mitchell 8 Martha Mitchell 6 All born Manchester. My guess is that Annie married John Cumming as a 2nd husband and Martha thought of him as her real father.

Have you tried searching for Martha as both Mitchell and Cumming?

Carol

Terry, does the marriage certificate give Martha`s age when she married, which would narrow down the years to look for her birth.

Can someone help please? I have an ancestor Robert Blyth, who was born in Fife in 1893. I have his birth cert and his marriage cert. He married Martha Mitchell Cumming on 2/9/1919 in Fife. Her parents shown as John Cumming (tailor) and Annie Mitchell (dec'd) Martha is shown as a Nursery Governess, aged 24. Her U/A shown as Kent House, Herne Bay. Robert died on 9/2/1968 in St Batholemews Hosp, London with usual address, 2 Wartlers Mews, Islington. I know from other certs he was in London in 1930s and 1940s. Death reg'd by sister Isa Blyth of same address. I didn't know about this sister! I have free access to Ancestry just now but am really struggling. to search English records. I can't find Martha's birth or death or anything on her parents. There is no trace in Scotlandspeople so I am assuming she is English. I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Terry
