hi all, this is my problem, and im hoping theres a solution, although i doubt it. my father in law born in 1913 had a brother JOHN BINGHAM born in 1919. they both got called up for duty in WW2 and this is where the problem lies. It appears at the end of the in 1945 my father in law was in Paris, at the same time as his brother John. but the earlier story goes that John deserted in South Africa some 2 years earlier, but now the story is that they met in Paris when they were on their way home from Paris to get demobbed, but John told his brother that he wouldnt be going home, but not to worry he would be ok as he had other plans. He never returned home, so officially he deserted, as he hadnt been demobbed. when his dad and mom died some years later, they advertised in the English papers for him to telephone, write or even come home,but no luck. Now does anybody have any ideas as to how I can find out anything, whether the records for WW2 would be available for me to check just what happened to him, or is there any other channel open to me to find anything about him? Seeing as the rumour is he was in France at the time, I assume he must have had plans to stay there, maybe im wrong, but are there any records available from France which might help? Im hoping he never changed his name, he might even have died in France. Anyc clues anybody which might help?

Army records are only available to the individual or their next of kin (ie child) If John did desert and was caught he would probally have been court marshaled and conciquently could have been shot in theory. If John stayed in Paris he may have married there and had a family. Have you tried searching GR for a match to John as any of his decendents could be here. The family may have already tried this but the Red Cross opperates a trace and message service www.redcross.org.uk There is a link from the home page to some info about this service
