Gardham Hardbattle. The name was sometimes spelt differently. On the headstone of his childrens grave his name is spelt Gardhan. He was from Lund near Beverley East Yorks His parents were John Hardbattle born 1854 and Mary Winter Blanchard born c1860. I know he married a Margaret known as Peggy and they had 2 children that I know of Dick and Peggy who died aged 10 & 12. I have trawled through the free bmd's and I cannot find his birth or much more about him. There is a John Gardham Hardbattle but that is his brother. I know he definately lived into his late 20's/late 30's as I have a photograph of him. I would assume from the photograph and the dates of his siblings births he would have been born around 1880. ANy help would be appreciated. Sarah |

If, as you think, he was born c1880, his birth ought to have been registered......as by then it was compulsory. Freebmd is not complete..........you need to search the FULL records on Ancestry...they are free, although you do have to register with the site. Reg |

I have John Hardbatle born 1854 and Mary Winter Blanchard born c1860. John was married before to Isabella Hogg and they had a daughter Mabel born 1880 so Gardham would have been born after 1880. I have Gardhams sister Blanche Martha born 1892 and in the photograph I have she looks about 12 (she died in 1905 a year after the pic) but Gardham much older so that narrows it down between 1880 and 1892. What do you think? Sarah |

Reg, With George W what do the age 5/12 mean? is that 5 months or 5 and a half? |

Here are the family on the 1901 Census - names have been mistranscribed. Definitely there is a son Gardham aged 5 on the actual census page. Blanche Hardcastle 7 George W Hardcastle 10 James Hardcastle 8 John Hardcastle 46 Kate Hardcastle 1 Mary Hardcastle 37 Tarddham Hardcastle 5 RG13; Piece: 4464; Folio: 31; Page: 4. As an after thought - are you 100% sure he had a brother named John? Could it not be that he was John Gardham but used his middle name to avoid confusion with his father? |

Yes, 5/12 is five months. Looking at Athena's find.........I rather suspect that the older boy in the photo would have been George......... Did you find the headstone info? Reg |

I'm pretty sure my above theory could be right... Name: John Gardham Hardbattle Year of Registration: 1895 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Beverley (1837-1937) County: Yorkshire - East Riding Volume: 9d Page: 123 ( Birth year of 1895...if there was a separate son of this name then he would be showing with the family on the 1901 census - instead we have little 5 yr old Gardham...must be him...surely? |

That theory must be true then. So he must have been born John Gardham but know as Gardham?? (Ilove that name!!) |

also with the photograph, if Gardham was younger than Blanche it cant be him in the pic. I can send you the pic if you want to see it, also have gravestone on now to send |

I guess the older boy in the photo must have been either James or George then... At least your little mystery is solved now. |
