Do you have their marriage certificate. This should give their fathers names and occupations and from this you should be able to find the families on the census. Mary Smith is a very common name. I just hope her father was not called John.

If anyones got, or can find any information on John Mitchinson c1834 or his wife Mary Smith c1836 from Wigan Lancashire, it would be greatly appreciated as i have come to a dead end it seems.. Trying to find out their parents, grandparents etc mainly.. Thanks xx
