I have my Great Grandad's marriage details which gives his occupation as a ship's steward, resident in Tilbury 1911. On my grandfather's (Scottish) death certificate it gives his father's (my great grandad) occupation as Union Official. I am aware that there was a dock strike there in 1911. I may be guessing but it is possible that if he was a trades union official he may well have been involved in that strike. My great grandad died in 1913 so all the information my grandad had would have been passed sown by his mum. Does anybody have any suggested sources on where I can look to try and find out more? I will be visiting Essex RO soon to look through the papers etc relating to the strike but as I'm relatively new to family history I'd appreciate any suggestions regarding investigating the trade union (possible) connection. |

Things you could google : Daily Herald (the newspaper brought out for the strike - originally called The World) Ben Tillett - leading union man of the time and one of the founders of the Labour party. |
