i have a copy of a marriage certificate of one of my ancesters where its the mothers name in the fathers box and in the rank or profession box of the father it says spinster. regards carol ps i thought good on you girl |

If the cert is from Eng / Wales then a missing Fathers name would suggest the child was illigitimate but mum's name would never be recorded If cert is Scottish then child could be a foundling or orphened at a young age and didn't know the parents names. It might be worth having a look at the witnesses as they are sometimes family members. |

Surely a marriage cert only shows the dad ,i cant recall it ever showing Mums name as well. It may well mean he was illegitimate but his birth should be registered in mums name. Do you want to give any names and dates. |

I have one on which both bride and groom have a line through the box where the fathers name should be............I have no idea why but it is frustrating...not been able to progress beyond them |

I have a marriage certificate which shows no parents for the groom - there is just a line drawn in each space. What does this indicate? Foundling, criminal?? How can I go about finding out more? There seems to be nothing else on records for this person - I haven't even found a record of death yet. |
