Trying to make some headway with John Evans and his wife Letitia. What is Letitia’s maiden name and who were her and John’s parents. What I have so far: John Evans born between 1837 and 1840 in Llanedy, Carmarthenshire. Living in Llanedy in 1871 and in 1881 with his wife Letitia Letitia born c1842 Llannon, Carmarthenshire Children listed in the 1871 census David (1864), Evan (1867) and Llewellyn (1870) Joined by John and Mary Anne in 1881 census Thanks in anticipation.

I have lots of Evans in Wales, but probably not connected to your lot! Letitia should be relatively easy to find.

I quite agree she should be but I wasn't having any joy. Can't find the marriage and not sure how to search for a Letitia anywhere when I have no maiden name.

This is the only Letitia born around 1842 in Carmarthenshire in 1851 index: Letitia Griffiths abt 1842 Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales Daughter Bettws Carmarthenshire Parents: John,Anne Of course this might not be her, or she may have been confused about where she was born (some of my husband's Welsh lot don't even know which COUNTY!) Or she may be mistranscribed.

Llandilo is quite a distance from Llannon and I'd rule out mistranscription as it is the same in both 1871 and 1881 census. It's a bit of a puzzle this one.

The census should tell you which reg district they are in - you can then search for the birth of one of the children in that reg district - hopefully there won't be many to choose from - I've managed to trace quite a few fairly common names going by the reg district and date using age on census. The birth cert will give Letitia's name. Alternatively, you can trawl the actual census images for Llanon and go through the whole place, though not sure how many pages it would be.

Thanks Helen. Nice tip for finding mum! Time to renew Ancestry after a year of doing no research and paying for it!

1851 - possibles? Lellice Davies abt 1840 Llanon, Carmarthenshire, Wales Daughter Llannon Carmarthenshire parents:Jacob, Ann Letticia Evans abt 1840 Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, Wales Servant Llannon Carmarthenshire I know the ages aren't right, but they could have been rounded up or down. In particular, with servants, the entry would have been completed by an employer who might not have much idea. Or your Letitia might have been a bit vague about her age in 1871-81.

That all looks promising Helen. At last a mention of Llannon. There's a 3 year variation on John's between 1871 and 1881. Time to speculate on a certificate I think

1841 has lots of John Evans born in Llanedy, but this is only one b. 1838 and with a Charlotte and David in household: David Evans abt 1806 Llanedy Carmarthenshire Mary Evans abt 1811 Carmarthenshire, Wales Llanedy Mary Evans abt 1829 Carmarthenshire, Wales Llanedy David Evans abt 1831 Carmarthenshire, Wales Llanedy Carmarthenshire Charlotte Evans abt 1833 Carmarthenshire, Wales Llanedy Carmarthenshire Llwelyn Evans abt 1836 Carmarthenshire, Wales Llanedy Carmarthenshire >> John Evans abt 1838 Carmarthenshire, Wales Llanedy Carmarthenshire Harriet Evans abt 1840 Carmarthenshire, Wales Llanedy Carmarthenshire Carmarthenshire At least Llwelyn is a change!

So that David who's 47 is the head/father of the household?
