There is a record of 12 year old Herbert and Marie Elkins working in what may be an orphanage in 1851. Marie also has a 1 year old daughter but there is no mention of a William Elkins so I presume he died just before the census. I'm inclined to accept that the record I found is the family for now, that is until I can find birth certificates. The illiterate situation is something that I have come across a few times. Whilst tracing the Diamond family I came across Dimants and Dimmonds plus strangely misspelt first names. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Chris, Many folk were illiterate (no offence intended) in those days, if the enumerator mis-heard the name or mis-spelled the name, the householder would not be able to correct it. So yes it is possible to have slightly different names between census. Keith

I am trying to find my great, great, great, great grandfather. I have found who I believe is his wife (a Marie Elkins) but I have no maiden name. I also have found a 1841 census record that is perfect age wise and names my grandfather as a William Elkins. The problem is that Maria is Mary (which I can understand) and Herbert is listed as Henery. Is Henery a form of Henry or might it just be Herbert? He is 3 years old and that is just right to be Herbert. Are there too many coincidences for it not to be the right match or am I hoping?
