Berni, Only know stuff about WW1. The Medal Cards I've had don't show date of birth - they have regiment, regimental number, medals awarded and theatre in which the man served - plus when service ended. You'll see KIA - killed in action - if the poor chap didn't survive and there'll be a date. Whilst I've heard that a project is afoot to digitise the Service Records (which are a catalogue of the individual's service and include various personal data like next of kin and address), at the moment they are only available on microfilm at the National Archives in Kew. Not all records survived WW2 bombing, but in my experience a goodly number are there - I've usually found my man. On the WW2 front, I believe you can get service records if you're the next of kin. I have looked at Regimental War Diaries at Kew to get a feel for what a particular unit was doing at a certain time - they give you great background but nothing specific on an individual. May be someone else can comment more fully on WW2 issues. Good luck with your research. Annie

Sapper is the Royal Engineers term for what would be a private in other regiments. Peter
