In 1901 the occupation of Isabella Goodson aged 14 of Long Eaton Derbyshire is 'Jacker off' I assume it is something to do with the lace indusstry - any ideas????? Peter |

Hi Peter, Just Googled and found this: 1921 Dict. Occup. Terms (1927) §399 Jacker-off (lace); takes off from bobbins, waste lengths of unused threads, and winds them on to large wooden bobbins, using a small winding machine. |

You're welcome Peter. :-) I just found a link of local interest (remove the brackets): http://www.beeston-notts(.)co(.)uk/mellors.shtml If you search for 'jacker' on the page, you get to a paragraph about Rev John Clifford, who was a jacker-off at the age of 11. It says he was born in Sawley which is next to Long Eaton. A local primary school was named after him, which still exists in Beeston today. |

Annie Yes, we did! It is something to do with making hats apparently. They didnt think about the embarrassment they would cause us when they went down the job centre 150 years ago, did they? OC |
