been searching the BMD 's and seems to have found my ancestors but there seems to another person listed with the same ref Birth record name : District: ref: George James TERRY Sheppey junQ1850 5 , page 499. Edward William TERRY Sheppey junQ1850 5, page 499 can a record have the same ref as another ? or does this mean he might have a twin?? or do they happen to be on the same page ?? I have found another duplicate record for his son's birth record Edward James TERRY Edmunton JunQ 1902 3a 529 Elsie A TERRY Edmunton JunQ1902 3a 529 .. any ideas what this means or do I have to get all the certificates to be sure ..? any help would be appreciated |

Unless it is an amazing coincidence, the scenario suggests a twin birth......... Have you traced the children on 1851 census? Reg |

It is not possible to drawn any direct inferences from the fact that entries have the same reference. It simply means they were entered up in the register on the same page. The number of entries per page has varied over the years but having just checked for my grandfather born in 1871 there were a total of ten entries with the same reference. It is possible, that two births with the same name on the same page are related, but you can only be certain by checking the certs. |

From checking the later censuses it appears that Edward Terry was the son of John and Catherine Terry. This is 1861 - his age has been mis-scribed on the Ancestry Index - it should read 10. Registration district: Sheppey Sub-registration district: Minster Household Members: Name Age Anne Terry 3 Catherine Terry 34 Edward Terry 12 John Terry 46 Kate Terry 5 Mo Louisa Terry 9 Thomas Terry 5 In 1871 he is shown as Edward W Terry age 20. So it looks like he was not a lost twin. Distant cousin, perhaps? |
