Hi, I was wondering if anyone can advise how I trace my grandads siblings. I have seen another post that helps if someone was born after 1911 but my grandad was born in 1898. I obtained his birth certificate and I have his mothers name but no father is listed. My mum thinks he had 2 younger brothers who also had the mothers surname. Many thanks for any help, Jeanette |

Jeanette, you need to give us your grandfather's name and perhaps his mother's name so we can help. Also where he was born. Susan |

My Grandad is Thomas Percy Platt 19/09/1898. His mother was Margaret Ann Platt. I have found her on the BMD for Jan/ Feb/ Mar 1880. Grandad was born in Bolton and Margaret is listed as Barton, Bolton. In 1901 grandad is listed as a lodger age 2 at 44 Silverwell Lane, Bolton and Margaret as a cotton winder age 21 at 33 raphael St, Bolton. Her adress at grandads birth was 44 Silverwell Lane, I dont know why she left him there! I assume from all this that the brothers must have been born after 1901 and my mother thinks they all took the surname Platt. Hope this helps, Thanks again, Jeanette |

A mammoth task without names and years........ On the freebmd part of Ancestry alone, there are 138 births in Bolton for the name Platt in the years 1904+/- 5.......... Reg |

Jeanette a quick look on FreeBMD showed loads of male Platts born in Bolton after your grandfather's birth. I guess she left him with another family because she was a single mother who had to work to support herself. I have a number of ancestors who were lodging with other families. I think the mother would pay them to look after their child. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Susan |

Thank you both for your help. I was hoping I could trace them from her name. My mothers memory is sketchy but she thinks they were called Jack and James and she remembers Margaret died in a mental institution. Sounds like she had a tough life! Many thanks again, Jeanette |
