Zoe Edward is recorded as a barman on the certificate. I believe I have found Fanny with her family in 1871 in Harlesden. I have tried every possible spelling for Vaux in the census for 1851, 1861 and 1871 without finding Edward. |

Hi Linda. My dad's side was Vaus. They lived in Sussex from at least 1748 through 1820's or so. They moved to Surrey during the 1820's. My ancestor left for Canada in the 1850's; but, some of this line stayed in Surrey longer, and others left the county. The name was supposedly (originally) Vaux, then changed to Vaus around the mid-1700's. However, I did find an aunt or sister (don't remember) to my direct ancestor and she went back to the Vaux spelling in the mid-1800's. I'd love to share the info I have, if you think there might be a connection. |

Does it not give any addresses on the marriage cert? Does it give Edwards occupation? And have you found Fanny in the 1871 census as she may be near where he is. Many thanks Zoe |

Yes Judith, that sounds like him. I have census entries for him after his marriage, but before that there seems to be nothing that fits. |

Is he the Edward who was 31 in 1881 and born Walworth, Surrey 40 in 1891 (mistranscribed Vares) born Brixton, London 51 in 1901 (mistranscribed as Vant this time) born Walworth, London He seems fairly consistent about his age and place of birth at least. |

Firstly, the birth may not have been registered.........it wasn't compulsory until 1875. Have you found a baptism? Reg |

I would be grateful for any help that anyone can give me in following the Vaux path in my tree. I have no trouble with the details of the marriage of my gt grandfather Edward Vaux, but further than that there is muddle and confusion. I have the marriage certificate of Edward which says that he is 22 in August 1871 when he marries Fanny Amelia Collins in Middlesex. The certificate says that his father was John Vaux- a butcher. The trouble is I can not find the birth entry for Edward in the BMD index, despite searching from 1848- 1855, just in case he is lying on his marriage certificate, - his bride is 24.The census searches have proved similarly unhelpful - these say that he was born in Surrey. Can anyone untangle this for me or offer to shed any light at all? Thanks again. |
