After reading several threads - I must have a gripe i am getting really fed up with the people on here that wont open up there trees, the whole point of Genealogy is sharing information, Yes so what if there errors, help each other out and get the correct information out there so people in the future wont make mistakes. I find the whole thing pathetic, I open up my tree and advise everyone use what information you want but please check it because i am human and mistakes happen. I have meet some lovely people that are linked to my tree and hope to build and establish a lot more contacts in the future, Please think about what you are doing withholding your tree, is there really any point in you being a member or even doing this as a hobby ??

In the beginning I thought there was no harm in opening my tree. However I then started to get hotmatches from someone who was no relation to me at all - yet she'd copied chunks of my tree and merged them into hers. Admittedly they were all dead rellies but to my mind they don't belong to her tree. I now don't open my tree very often unless I'm sure of a link, and I close it up again after a couple of days!

Try emailing her to make the corrections and explain the inportance of getting the information right, she may not even realise what she has done.

I had the same happen to my tree, I took all the relevant steps - sending mail and contacting genes - this tree collector has taken about 200 people from my tree that are very distantly connected to hers. And to top it all said I was harrassing her by asking her to delete - so now I've learnt my lesson and dont open it till I'm 100 per cent sure there is a connection.

Genealogy is about sharing the facts, one member should not put you off, if everyone chose not to open there trees unless they were a close relative none of us would get anywhere, who knows you may have errors in your tree you will never know if no one checks your tree............

I agree it is very unfair being rude to you there is no need, people with that type of attuitude will get no where, dont let it dishearten you though, hopefully a one off incident...........

I have someone who just asked to see my tree(nothing else), on two occassions and wrote back to ask him who he was looking for. at least to give me 1 name but he never replied so presume he was just latching on. Why can't some of these people send back replies. I do believe some of them are people who are doing it for financial gain

Hello Patricia, I agree with you, but after you have had you tree ' raped' (in my case twice) you do tend to be on guard. Some peeps just want to be able to say ' I have X number in my tree ' the more they have the better that feel Getting proof that 'this person' is indeed an ancester of yours is a very expencive hobby and I resent an 5th cousin 10 times removed?? getting information for free. It will cost me over 20 dollars and then 10 days snail mail to get to North Queensland End of gripe but that is the reason I will not open my tree to just anyone Regarde Sheila
