Anthea Are you sure it's MATRON maker? Is it on a cert or a census? Angela

I agree - it does look like Matron Maker. I see his brother is a gold chain maker & father a brass finisher. Wonder if it's something to do with metals? Angela

Sure it's not Natron? Natron is a white, crystalline hygroscopic mineral salt, primarily a mixture of sodium bicarbonate (common baking soda) and sodium carbonate (soda ash) with small amounts of sodium chloride (table salt) and sodium sulfate. Natron is somewhat antiseptic and is also an exfoliant and a desiccant. In ancient Egypt, natron was put to a wide variety of uses, including mummification. Because it has strong grease-cutting properties, natron has also been associated with soap production. Natron is used to make Bavarian pretzels. The dough is dipped into a natron solution to give it its brown color and distinctive flavor when baked.

Well, you could be right,Paul Barton Special Agent. I will take a closer look at census tomorrow, as I have to go to pub. Would Natron be used in the gold or jewlery buisness? Anthea

Misreading of matrix maker on original census forms when making a fair copy? Matrix can mean mould, as in casting metals etc.in a mould. Would fit in with the brass finisher.

There you go, Anthea.... Roger and I have given you two credible alternatives. What do you reckon?

Natron is/was widely used in the jewellery trade to make artificial pearls, by repeatedly dipping glass beads into a solution of natron. OC
