Hi I have received a photocopy from the GRO of a marriage cert from 1852 which says my GGG grandparents were married at the register office, but crossed out below that it says catholic chapel. Any ideas as to the reason for this or was it just a mistake by the registrar? Thanks Sheena |

If the register office was crossed out, presumably they married in the Catholic chapel - does it say which one? Sounds a bit odd. Does the certificate say the marriage was conducted by the registrar or by a priest? That would indicate where the marriage took place. Maybe they got married in a civil ceremony as well as at the Catholic chapel. |

At that time a chapel wedding had to be attended by a civil registrar, taking his book with him. So the chapel weddings and the register office weddings are all mixed up in the same register. When the registrar wrote out his GRO transcripts at the end of the quarter, maybe his eye just wandered onto the wrong entry while he was copying |

I have quite a few where the venue is listed as 'Register Office or Registrar Attended' - lazy tyke couldn't be bothered to write in the name of the (fortunately) popular local methodist chapel. OC |
