I have an ancestor John Waterton who was born in Raythorp about 1814. The 1861 census says it is in Yorks but I cant find it anywhere. Does anybody have any advice on how I can locate the place or has anybody heard of it? Any help greatly appreciated.

Youre a star Jim! 1881 census has him down as being born in Warmfield Yorks. Still non the wiser about Raythorp though.

Is it hand written? Because there's Caythorpe, Lincolnshire, Caythorpe, Nottinghamshire, Both can be spelt with a K or KE to make matters worse!

I think the numerator misheard Raythorpe for Kirkthorpe. If you google Warmfield there is a lot of info on the area. Good luck Irene

Thats fantastic. Its amazing I got a marriage certificate today for my great grandfather and have leapt back in time to a whole bunch of ancestors that will keep me occupied for a while thanks to you two. This message board facility is really helpful if you get stuck and need alternative sources to investigate. Thanks again
