Where is St Olave?

I'm trying to trace the death of my Great Great Grandfather Mark Waters. He had my Great Grandfather Frederick Waters in 1858 and my Great Grandmother remarried in 1862, so he would have died between those times (or possibly shortly after my Great Grandfather was concieved). I've found three possible listings: 1862 Oct Nov Dec Norwich 4b 123 1859 Apr May Jun St Olave 1d 26 1858 Apr May Jun Amesbury 3a 114 Given that the family centre around the Medway/Chatham/Rochester areas of Kent, I wouldn't have thought Norwich was a likely area, nor Amesbury really. St Olave seems to be in Norfolk, but in another thread, I see someone has mentioned St Olave in London. Does anyone know where abouts it is? All I can find is what I think is a statue by Westminster bridge. Is there an actual place in London called St. Olave that could be near enough to Kent to be where he may have died? Any clues would be much appreciated ! |

Sub-districts : Bermondsey; Leather Market; St. James Bermondsey; St. John Horsleydown; St. Mary Magdalene; St. Olave Southwark; Rotherhithe. GRO volumes : IV (1837-51); 1d (1852-1901). |

St Olave Bermondsey and St Olave Southwark were registration districts of London, there is also a very small village in Norfolk called St Olaves. hope this helps, Caroline |

Gerry According to Genuki - Southwark - St Olave was a registration district which was abolished in 1902 - being replaced by Bermondsey St Olave. Included in this is the area of Rotherhithe. If you look on a map this isn't a million miles away from Bexleyheath/Dartford/Gravesend which are in Kent?? Shirls |

Hmmm..... Many thanks for that everyone. I think St. Olave could be a possibility then. Maybe he was working there or in a hospital of some kind. Just seems odd that he didn't die closer to home. |

There was a St Olave Hospital in Rotherhithe. St Olave Rotherhithe was a sub Registry of Bermondsey,London. |

Firstly I would just like to say that Rotherhithe, Bermondsey are VERY close to Tower Bridge and at least 10 miles from Bexleyheath and even further from Dartford. St Olave did have a very large Workhouse which you can read about in www.workhouses.org.uk/ Use the Search tool at the top of listings in left hand column. I did have a rellie there but no trace of her on the 1901 Census because all records were burned in a fire - info from LMA London. |
