WW1 medal cards cover Irishmen serving in the Army in WW1 - they will give you the regiment and crucially the regimental number. With those 2 items you are on the way to getting hold of his service documents from Kew, IF they don't form part of the burnt records (about 70%) Good luck Keith

Hi Berni, If you are talking about the WW1 medal cards on Documents Online at The National Archives, it only costs £3.50 to download, so you needn't worry too much about whether or not to get it. But it won't tell you much, apart from what medals he got and which country he fought in, and what regiments etc. he served in, but it tells you that bit (regiment) on the free search anyway. It won't give you any details of his family or anything like that. But with these Irish ancestors, every little bit helps! Kate.
