I am off to the London Met Archives next week to search for some elusive baptisms etc. What I would like to know what were the main churches for someone who says on various censuses they were born in Lambeth. I know of St. Mary.........any help appreciated.........Thanks.

When you get to the LMA, as you come through the door to the main room, there is a double-sided shelf unit, arranged by London Borough. Find Lambeth under L and choose the parish registers file. It will have all the churches for that area and tell you what they hold and where to find it If in doubt, the staff are very helpful.

Hi Sue..... what dates are you looking for ?

Hi Jean The dates I am looking at are from about 1810 onwards. I am also looking for churches classed as St. Giles and Cripplegate. So confusing.

Jean Durant Report 5 Oct 2006 21:02

The good news Sue is that in 1810 there is only one church in Lambeth and that is : St Mary the Virgin In 1824 St John the Evangelist, Waterloo Road is added and in 1825 St Mark,Kennington Park Road, Kennington (baptisms 1825-1847 and marriages 1825-1837 were destroyed in the 2nd World War but there are Bishops Transcripts. The only other church is St Matthew, Brixton Hill also established in 1825. The bad news is Cripplegate registers are held at The Guildhall. When you say St Giles do you mean a church or reg. district. ? Jean x.

Jean Thank you so much for the info, this will help me a lot. Pity about the Cripplegate registers. Is it only one church or are there more. Yes I do mean the St. Giles district. I am also interested to see if there are any workhouse records for St. Giles and Bloomsbury as in the 1841 and 51 censuses I had rellies in there.

Sue Two different St Giles! St Giles Cripplegate is in the City of London; St Giles reg district refers to St Giles in the Fields and is in the City of Westminster. St Giles Cripplegate is the church now surrounded by the Barbican entertainment and housing development. Information here: www.stgilescripplegate.org.uk/ St Giles reg district was Bloomsbury and not the same area. The church concerned is St Giles in the Fields, near Tottenham Court Road/Centrepoint. You can see a map of the parish of St Giles here: www.stgilesonline.org/our-church/location.php and info here on Genuki: http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/StGilesInTheFields/index.html St Giles Reg district info here: ST. GILES REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : London. Created : 1.7.1837 (sometimes 'St. Giles & St. George' in early listings). Abolished : 1.4.1930 (succeeded by Holborn district). Sub-districts : Bloomsbury & St. Giles South; St. George Bloomsbury; St. Giles & Bloomsbury; St. Giles North; St. Giles South. GRO volumes : I (1837-51); 1b (1852-1930). Registers now in Camden district.
