I am in possession of a family bible which belonged to my grandmother (Beatrice Maud Dransfield). Originally the bible belonged to another person called Seth Slack. I am researching both lines but cannot seem to link them together. Can anyone give me any suggestions on where to look. Unfortunately the timeline is relatively new as my grandmother was born in 1911 and Seth Slack in approx 1850. Seth was alive in the 1901 census but I cannot find any link after this. My grandmother's parents were Thomas Dransfield and Mary Webb. If anyone out there can help with ideas on where to look I would be grateful

Maryanne start by looking at your great grandparents, trace them back in the census, registers and do the same with 'Seth Slack' - my bet would be that Seth is Mary's brother. You say you're researching 'both lines', how far back do you go? regards Looby

Thank I've traced the Dransfield line back to about 1812 (can't remember as at work so don't have my full tree here) and the Slacks to about 1650. Can't find any link so far on either lines

Hello Marianne Have you looked on 1881 Census ? There is a Seth Slack aged 31 living in fathers household in Heeley, York regards Jim

I managed to trace Seth Slack to 1901 but cannot go any earlier as traced back to 1650 and no link so I think that the connection (if there is one) could be after 1901. Does anyone think that it could be possible that the family bible could have been sold/passed to another family?

Maybe Seth Slack was her godfather and the bible was passed to her on her christening or something?

well if you know the area she was born in - you could search for parish records for the church she may have been baptised in. They might show details of godparents.

Have you checked the marriages/remarriages for Seth's siblings, their children, and other members of the Dransfield and Webb families? It might lead somewhere useful.

Hi Marianne I inherited my Grandmothers family bible last year, in our bible it has names and dates but I can't find a connection to the named family and mine dispite conactting decendents of the named people (2 generations from the named people). I think sometimes bibles were sold or given away and bought by other families, partically if someone never married and their siblings had moved away. Rachel

The Family Bible my mother has was a Christmas present from an employer to my mother's great-grandparents. The one my father had was 2nd hand and has a different name in it. Someone who was living in Liverpool, yet the Bible made its way to Hackney where my great-grandmother filled in the entries for her family.
