Genealogy Chat

This may be a stupid question, but is there a way of transferring the information from one person's family tree to mine other than laboriously having to type in all the data. I have been in contact with a distant relative who has already traced the family tree back to 1425 (saves me a heap of work) but logging in all the information into my tree on GR is taking a long time as there are thousands of names. Any tips would be appreciated. Slow but steady

Leonie, you could ask them to send you a GEDCOM file and then you can get a family tree program on your computer and load from the GEDCOM file into it. Also download a GEDCOM of your tree from GR, and merge the two trees in your family tree program. Then you can extract a GEDCOM from your family tree program and upload it to GR. But a word of warning - you would be well advised to check every step of your relative's research before adding it to your tree. A certain close relative of mine has traced one of my lines back about as far as you say yours has, but when I looked at my relative's tree on GR, I was about 99% certain that there was a mistake in the early 19th century which meant that that whole line was wrong! (I've never dared to tell that person, but I haven't added anything from their tree into mine without checking!) Kate.
