my grandmother had 2children the last one being my aunt who was born in 1893 who had her dads surname,about the same time her dad died, then her mum remarried ,then in 1901 i find that my aunts surname has changed from spraggon to bell would have my grandfather have adopted her ? how can i find out sorry to be so long winded thanks hazel. |

There was no formal adoption until 1927. The chances are her mother just changed her name so it was the same as the family name. Once she reached adulthood she may have reverted to her original name or kept the new one. I very much doubt the name would have been formally changed (ie. by deed poll) You can use any name you please providing it is not for fraudulant purposes. |

hi janet, she was born with the name spraggon but iwhen i looked up her marriage she was under the name bell hazel. |

She may not have even been aware that her mother's husband wasn't her father if he died when she was little. |
