Glitter Baby - sorry if I have offended you. I am fairly new to family research and have been back on here after a relatively long absence. I am very grateful to all who have helped and happy to help others where I can. It is easy to miss responses to threads, I think anyway. I have written with good will and good intentions and am quite upset by your response.

Disgusted that you have not bothered to check this thread and acknowledge the help you have been given. I will not accept any excuse from you as you have been on the site and posted several other threads, since this one, which no doubt you have ignored as well. Certainly will not be willing to help you again. Maureen

Checked Scotlands people and there isn't an Alexander Daniel Stephen aged between 29 and 31 in Angus in the 1901 census. There is however only one Alexander Stephen in Dundee aged beteen 29 and 31 however in the 1901 Angus census. Betty

Betty, I nudged the thread as Julia has been on site today and appears not to have checked this thread. She has now got 1881 census, birth details and marriage details for the parents. Maureen

Corrected the url for scotfamtree. I'd put the brackets round the wrong dot.

Liz, Yes the 1881 details look very promising. I had sent Julia the copy of the marriage cert and it showed Alex as age 33 in 1903 giving the birth year of 1869/70 so did have a bit of a head start in finding the birth details. Maureen

The others have come up with the information you require so I won't bother repeating that. However, as regards tips for using Scotland's People it's always helpful to identify clues to narrow down the geographical search. The way I did that in this case was to look at the 1903 marriage cert which showed that the son was a sergeant in the Gordon Highlanders, the main recruiting area for that regiment being around Aberdeen. Another interesting point to note perhaps for later was that neither the son nor his parents were married in the Established Church. This sort of thing can often be of significance as you work backwards towards 1855 when civil registration started. Denis.

Julia, Check out the IGI as you will find his birth listed as 1869. Hopefully the first census you can find him on is 1871. Maureen update Alexander Daniel Stephen Father: Alexander Stephen Mother: Jessie Shaw 26 APR 1869 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland Also the possible marriage Alexander Stephen and Jessie Shaw 24 APR 1868 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland

It is a challenge to narrow your search down to 24 possibles without losing the person you're trying to find. But the wealth of detail on Scottish BMD records is fantastic. Are you aware of a newish Scottish genealogy site with helpful moderators who think nothing of camping out in the Mitchell Library for weeks doing lookups for lesser mortals? http://scotfamtree.11.forumer(.)com/ (delete brackets)

Finally I have registered so thanks to all who helped. As I have common names in my tree I am unsure what I can find out easily? Already wasted lots of credits. I have a relative Alexander Daniel Stephen who married in 1903 but can't find on a census as such a common name and site doesn't appear to recognise middle names? His father was Alexander Stephen (deceased) and mother Jessie Smith previously Stephen, maiden surname SHAW. I have an address: 64 Hilltown, Dundee and wife was Theresa Grant. Parents James Grant and Helen Grant nee Farrell. I guess I'll have to trawl through for likely births etc? Not sure what is easiest cheapest thing to check on site?
