Rose, I have the Newark and District Directory for 1957-8, which includes Farndon. I know it doesn't help with your 1901 search but does include some of , possibly, your Hall family, mail me if you would like the address list for them. (Don't want to put the full list, incase some of them still live there! Has Albert, Alfred, Cecil, Charles, Emily & William T.) Elisabeth Going out for a little while but will check later.

The description of the district has quite a few street names. Some enumeratrors just didn't do a very good job. The pubs are nearly always named, perhaps they 'visited' each one. Bob

The 1884 map of Farndon on Curious Fox has only three landmarks in the village, a church, a vicarage (at the other end of the village), a Methodist chapel and the Old Britannia Inn. There are only about 5 roads, none with a name. The rest of the area is farms. Westfield House is a small estate outside the village. The flour mill and malthouse are way outside the village. Hardly surprising that the enumerator had a struggle.

I've come to the conclusion that none of the houses had numbers and there were no street names for the enumerator to record. Look at the occupations - farmers and farm servants, people who worked at a lime kiln, schoolmasters, bricklayers, men of private means, brewery workers, foundrymen, basketmakers. There are farms, a brewery, a basket factory, a lime kiln, a foundry, three pubs and a vicarage. It's only when you get to dwelling no. 95 that you get the vicarage, 98 is named Westfield, 132 is the Travellers Rest, 168 is the Rose and Crown, 178 is the Britannia Inn. I'm going to have a look at Farndon on Curious Fox to see if there's an old map.

The numbers down the first column are the enumerator's count of households. Nothing to do with house numbers. If you can find a page with house numbers you will understand what i mean.

Page 8 of 23 show house number 95 and what looks like the 'vicarage' under street name (arthur lee sparks) later in page is number 98 and 'westfield' under street name.

I am trying to find the address of the Hall family in Farndon Notts on the 1901 census. I have got a print out of the page that they are on (William age 42 b Boston, Eliza 41 b Farndon, William 20, Minnie 14, Arthur 12, Charles 9, Albert 5 and Kitty 3 all born Farndon) which I downloaded when I had a free trial on Ancestry. Unfortunately there is no address in the address column, only 'cont' at the top. I can't look again at the previous pages as I don't have access at the moment. I would be ever so greatful if someone could have a look see for me. Maybe the 1901.gov site may give the address? I'm not sure on that. I am trying to find the street name to see if it still exists so I can go and take a picture. Thanks in anticipation. Rose
