Thanks Kathleen, a very good point. But a date of birth given is easily checked for accuracy by looking at just one quarter of birth index, as against 4 or more with age at death. Thanks also to Richard for his point re Birth place and Maiden names on certificates from April quarter of 1969. Something else I have learned today, thank you.

And, if you do buy a death cert from that date onwards, it will have place of birth and also maiden name of married females ... though once again, the accuracy of this info is dependent on the informant's knowledge, of course. Richard

Yes, it's very handy to be able to use the date of birth as a research tool, but you have to remember that the date of birth given is only as acurate as the memory of the informant on the death certificate. Sometimes the date (day and month) are correct, but the year is out by one or two years. It depends on how well the informant knew the deceased. Kath. x

I have been doing a one name study for six years, but it was only today that I discovered that the GRO DEATH INDEX from the April, May, June quarter of 1969 shows the actual Date of BIRTH. The Jan, Feb, March quarter of 1969 Shows Name, age at Death, The District, Vol. & Page ref. The small, but important change, took place in the next quarter. Just thought this fact may assist someone else with their research. Ray Whincup
