When u r doing ur tree with common names like smith or johnes or watever how do u check u have the right one that is in ur tree my gran was a jones born in wales dunno where but moved to london but i havent a clue where to start to look on that side of the tree arrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh lol

hiya ive looked on the free bmd site and its not listed yet cos ive looked at grannies name and granddads name but neither is listed and ive looked on ancestry but think its like looking for a needle in a haystack no she didnt marry a smith or jones

Dot, the marriage most likely took place too late to be on FreeBMD. Why don't you post the names up so we can help? Anyway, a general tip is to search for the marriage using the less common surname of the two. Kate.

thank u kate all i have on grandparents r mary jones (born somewhere in wales but think north) she married a john hewitt (not sure where he was born but i do no they lived in hounslow sw london there first child was born in 1935ish im sorry thats all i no about this part of family

Dotty there is a marriage in the september quarter 1932 in Paddington between John C Hewitt & Mary Jones ref no:1a-202. The only way to be sure it is your Mary is to buy the marriage certificate and check the details against one of the childrens birth certificates. Georgina.

thanks georgina it does look like the one i guess i havent got used to how the bmd things work on ancestry yet lol guess im gonna have to save up to buy the certificates and get back abit that way

The important thing is to work backwards one step at a time, starting with what you definitely know. That means starting with you (a bit more of a challenge if you were adopted). Then your parents' marriage, then their births/deaths. Then go on to their parents, and so on. If you make assumptions or believe what rellies tell you without checking it out, you can easily pick the wrong family, especially if they are Smiths!!
