hmm, thinking of wrong ancestor - it's actually a Thomas Maw - from Islington, but have found an appropriate death on freebmd for 1857. Although he's on the wedding cert, having checked another thread, think this is a possibilty. He's not on 1881 anyway. Have looked again at cert and think it could be 'dresser' - so thanks all. Mike - your islington furriers - do ou know if they worked for a company? emma |

Angela, yes some of mine were described as furriers as well, they all came from East London. Also have umbrella stick makers on census returns. Mike |

Mike ditto, skin dresser, skin dyer, Angela My skindressers were also described as furriers. Skindyers could be types of leather workers. |

Have you found him on the 1881 census to see what his occupation was then. Could it be Skin Dresser? Kath. x |

My ancestor is on his daughter's wedding cert in 1879 and his job is very hard to read. It looks like Skin something but the second word is illegible. On his own wedding cert in 1845 he is an Umbrella Maker - but this hasn't helped me! Any help / suggestions appreciated Emma |
